Caribbean Review: Anguilla's Del Mar Festival Seeks Sponsors, Should Britain Support Its Territory?
Introduction
Amongst its diverse isles, each Caribbean island takes celebrating culture very seriously. Many people know the large festivals such as Notting Hill, Cropover, and Spicemas; however, smaller islands’ celebrations also require sponsors to contribute to preserving their culture. This need has been recognised by governments, ensuring that investments are made to support organizations to put on events. This article will explore how Anguilla have been looking for sponsors for their Del Mar Festival. Being a British territory, should the UK invest into cultural events within their territories? Considering that recently there has been a £4.66 million investment into Notting Hill Carnival.
The Del Mar Festival
The Del Mar festival is an annual event, a huge celebration of culture, food and sports across Anguilla. The festival takes place in a fishing village, celebrating cultural ties to the sea. The festival includes multiple musical numbers, including steel pan and various DJ’. The event is also sponsored by several Caribbean companies including NCBA, FLOW, with additional sponsors such as the Four Seasons supporting the event.
The sponsor system for the festival includes five packages: Supporter, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Supporter is the cheapest option coming in at anything less than $1500 USD, while Platinum, being the most expensive, is marked at $7500 USD. Each section has a listed contribution as what an organization would get in return for their donation.
Supporter (Anything less than $1500 USD): Name listed on website (no logo), a “thank you" some time during the festival and social media group recognition.
Bronze Sponsorship ($1500 USD): Entry-level sponsorship, with essential recognition and logo listed on event signage.
Silver Sponsorship ($2500 USD): Everything in Bronze, plus logo and signage on the website.
Gold Sponsorship ($5000 US): Everything in Silver, plus logo placement on festival signage, verbal recognition from the mainstage and recognition on selected social media posts.
Platinum Sponsorship ($7500 US): Everything in Gold, plus premier logo placement on event signage, website materials and printed materials, recognition across all event-related social media posts, inclusion in all press releases, and promotional announcements.
It is thus fair to say that, given each band with the Del Mar Festival having 10 sponsors on their website above supporter level, the festival received an estimated $37,000 from sponsors. These amounts go towards vendors, small businesses and many more organizations that put on the event. However, despit being a British territory, there seems to a be lack of support from British companies and organizations.
Why Do Governments Invest In Cultural Events?
The UK government has acknowledged the significance of investing funds into such cultural events, as the mayor of London pledged £4.66 million pounds into Notting Hill carnival ahead of its 60th anniversary.
Notting Hill Carnival started in 1959, as a response to racial tensions that were escalating in the area in which a man called Kelso Cochrane died from a racially motivated attack at the time. The caribbean community responded wanting to celebrate their differences despite the ongoing racial tensions, in addition to police cover-ups that were becoming more evidence regarding the Kelso Cochrane case. It was then that Trinidadian activist Claudia Jones went to St. Pancreas Town Hall, spearheading conversations to launch the carnival of Notting Hill.
In the congested area, individuals with West Indian, African, and Irish heritage felt othered, and so started a street fayre in the mid-1960s to celebrate their cultures. People have marched in the streets since 1966, using music to celebrate and preserve West Indian culture within London.
Notting Hill Carnival today is still known as a community event, but has blossomed into a globally recognised carnival, being second in size to Brazil’s Carnival in Rio. Since 2024, Britan has recognized that, due to the event’s growth, increased investment is necessary. It is important to note that this investment is not going to performers or bands, as there are separate sponsors that fund them. However, this monetary boost are intended to provide better security measures, more stewards, and event control systems, as well as infrastructure for temporary toilets, water points and waste services. Overall, the funding is going towards event management, rather than the performances themselves, keeping the celebrations community-led.
These investments help sustain the carnival long-term, protecting its future and working towards reducing stereotypes that hinder the carnival’s reputation regarding safety. Better logistics means the carnival could look at expansion in a way that would make it resilient against potential risks of overcrowding or mismanagement.
How the Notting Hill Carnival Model could benefit events like Del Mar Festival
Notting Hill may be largely different in scale to Del Mar, but the principles remain: with substantial investments ,organizers are able to scale events in a safe and resilient way that helps boost the economy. Currently, Notting Hill Carnival brings in £396 million annually for the economy, from providing jobs to boosting income for local businesses. The turn over is able to be made and scale with government investment, being home to the second largest carnival in the world the UK has a model that could benefit their territories and boost their economies. Investment can be done in a way that prevents commercializing traditions and culture by investing purely into infrastructure.
With that said, it would be the responsibility of the Del Mar organizers to promote and scale the attraction of this event while using international investments in a way that keeps the carnival authentically Anguillan.
